Welcome to Love Wins Texas!

While working on this, our premiere issue of Love Wins Texas Weddings, it dawned on me that our mission isn’t only to help couples plan their own magical weddings, it’s also to document the poignant experiences of some of the first LGBT couples to marry in the Lone Star State. In Weddings of our Own, we’ve chronicled five Texas nuptials, each with its own joyful—and wonderfully personal—narrative, from trans couple Becca and Colt, who received a touching surprise during their reception (spoiler alert: siblings and cousins serenaded them with a special song), to Austinites Bob and Kevin, who obtained their marriage license on the first day Texas began issuing them—in front of a cheering crowd of supportive strangers.

Indeed, the idea for this twice-annual magazine (look for our summer/fall issue in July) took shape soon after last year’s momentous June 26 Supreme Court ruling, which ushered in a new era of marriage equality throughout the nation. In addition to showcasing actual Texan same-sex weddings, we’re passionate about inspiring you to plan the jubilant celebration you’ve dreamt about, perhaps for years. Throughout the magazine, you can read about the hottest trends in wedding fashion, artful cakes and florals, and must-have gifts.

Austin food writer Kate Payne wrote our mouthwatering guide to food-truck weddings, and my partner, Fernando Nocedal, and I spent several days exploring artsy Marfa and majestic Big Bend National Park researching what’s fast becoming one of the state’s hippest destination wedding locales. Every business owner I talked with in this sunny swath of West Texas spoke with unabashed excitement about the prospect of LGBT couples staging their weddings there.

As I write this note from a comfy leather armchair in the luxuriant lobby of San Antonio’s hip new Hotel Emma, whose staff is thrilled that I’m planning to feature the property in the next edition of our magazine, I’m amazed by how far Texas—and the country as a whole—has progressed in its embrace of same-sex marriage. We’ve waited patiently for this fundamental right, and our moment has finally arrived. Wedding planners, bakers, florists, photographers, DJs, and venue operators are standing by with open arms, eager to help you plan your special day. Who would have thought we’d have come so far, even just a year or two ago?

Congratulations!
