HOW THEY MET Working together at a previous employer.
HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED They’d talked about marriage for several years but wanted to wait until it was legal in Texas. Initially, a very intimate wedding was the plan, but once the couple finally had the opportunity, they realized there was plenty to celebrate, not to mention lots of friends and family that wanted to celebrate with them.
REHEARSAL DINNER For the benefit of their families, most of whom came from out of state and were visiting Texas for the first time, the couple hosted a dinner party at Bird Cafe in Sundance Square.
WEDDING-DAY WEATHER Almost perfect. After a beautiful early spring, the forecast was cold and rain. It did get windy and a bit cool, but all the couple remembers is the perfectly sunny evening at Fort Worth Botanic Garden.
NUMBER OF GUESTS 100
COLORS Ivory, white, black, and a bit of gray.
THEME They chose a neutral, classic wedding with traditional elements blended to fit within the context of the modern lines and monochromatic palette of the Modern Art Museum cafe.
FLOWERS White flowers in tailored arrangements. The bridal bouquets were white peonies with dusty miller leaves. The ceremony and reception centerpiece flowers were a combination of white hydrangeas, garden roses, and ranunculus. The attendants and mothers carried bouquets with similar flowers, plus anemones and gray brunia berries, which were also included on the patio, where the dancing took place.
DIY HIGHLIGHTS Emily learned calligraphy to address all the invitations and escort cards, and Emily’s mom made French macarons, which were boxed and placed at each table setting for guests. The veil was made by Emily’s mother, using tulle from the veil she and her two sisters (Emily’s aunts) wore.
THE MENU Passed hors d’oeuvres included grilled shrimp shooters with Bloody Mary sauce, warm brie with fig-merlot preserves and spiced walnuts, and tuna tartar with shiitakes and wonton chips. Highlights from the seated dinner included honey-teriyaki–glazed wild salmon with wasabi mash and sesame snap peas, roasted beef tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes and cabernet demi, and quinoa tabbouleh–and–sweet potato falafel. Breakfast burritos were provided as a late-night snack.
DESSERT Three-tier white wedding cake with blackberry filling and ivory and gray icing. They went with a clean, modern design with gumpaste flowers placed asymmetrically on the top tier.
MUSIC They flew in a very talented family friend of Emily’s to perform some of their favorite songs, such as “I Choose You” and “Better Place.”
IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER When the couple began working with planner Shannon Schultz two months before the big day, they realized how much it would have helped to hire her from the start. “She made the process so much less stressful and more enjoyable for us,” Emily says.
FAVORITE DETAILS The head table: they loved the flowers, and the candles on tables illuminated the entire room.
UNIQUE ELEMENT OF THE DAY Their bridal suite was in the back of a limo at the botanical garden. From there, they and their attendants were able to see guests arrive, which they all loved.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS Decide what’s important to you and stay true to that throughout the planning process. Finding a wedding planner whom you trust, and who understands you as a couple, can infinitely improve the experience.
