A decade before his death in 2005 at age 98, iconic modern architect Philip Johnson accepted one of his most deeply personal commissions: designing the campus of Dallas’s Cathedral of Hope, the world’s largest LGBTQ-focused congregation. Johnson had come out as gay just two years earlier.
His intimate yet expansive Interfaith Peace Chapel opened in 2010 and has become phenomenally popular for same-gender marriages. “It exudes love and peace, attributes that it was designed for and that couples bring with them on their special day,” says Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, the congregation’s senior pastor.
