NAMES Misty Hillin & Tammy Stanley
LIVE IN Lake Travis
OCCUPATIONS Misty is a physical and massage therapist; Tammy is an artist, illustrator, and designer.
HOW THEY MET Nearly 20 years ago in Dallas through a friend. Tammy had just opened a studio and hired Misty as a contractor.
HOW THEY GOT ENGAGED Tammy proposed with a black diamond engagement ring on Christmas Eve 2014. (Read the full story here). They discussed the wedding casually at first. Misty: “Then the morning of the SCOTUS ruling, while sipping coffee from our super gay rainbow mugs, we became so happy we started crying.” That moment inspired them to set a date.
BACHELORETTE PARTY A friend threw them an amazing party, complete with professional mermaids in her backyard pool.
REHEARSAL DINNER Delicious Italian food at Trattoria Toscano in Lakeway.
WEDDING DAY WEATHER Rainy and cold—they had to have the ceremony indoors.
NUMBER OF GUESTS 150
WEDDING COLORS Silver and red
THEME “Only Love Prevails”—something Tammy says often.
FLOWERS Three dozen long-stem roses.
DIY HIGHLIGHTS Tammy created the chandelier over the wedding altar and the rainbow up-lighting.
THE MENU Vegetarian, with Mexican flair. Misty: “The food was delicious—even the carnivores had seconds.”
DESSERT Several small bundt cakes.
MUSIC Misty worked closely with the band. “Not only did they play everything we love, they learned some key songs—that meant a lot to us.” The couple’s first dance: Maroon 5’s “Sugar.” They organized a flash mob to serve as backup dancers.
IF THEY HAD TO DO IT OVER They would have thought through the post-wedding logistics. Tammy: “We had to handle some things ourselves because we hadn’t planned for cleanup or delegated anyone for rental returns. It put a kink in our alone time.”
IF THEY COULD HAVE SPENT THEIR MONEY DIFFERENTLY They would have handled the flowers themselves.
FAVORITE DETAIL A sand ceremony with Tammy’s daughter, Ella. Misty: “It was a way to incorporate Ella into our union and to let her know she is included in our hearts and our life together.”
UNIQUE ELEMENTS OF THE DAY Because the couple had once impressed friends by dressing as Hall & Oates for Halloween, Misty and Tammy donned their feathered bangs and mustache once again for a wedding encore.
UNEXPECTED EVENT During the photo session, a tall, handsome friend whisked Misty off her feet and carried her across the muddy lawn to the altar.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS Misty: “You’ve planned, you’ve stressed, you’ve had to fire a vendor—all the ups and downs have happened. On your wedding day, let it all go. Just enjoy the moment.”
THE DAY IN THREE WORDS Epic, fairytale, “amaze-balls.”
